The Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital (THONEH) was established by the efforts of the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) from public donations. It was conceived as an extensive of its Prevention of Blindness program. Under this program, the public was made aware of the importance of preventing blindness through its numerous publicity campaigns, forums, publications and through its Mobile Eye Clinic, which operated mainly in the rural areas.

Our Mission

  • To provide comprehensive state-of-the-art professional services, diagnostic, curative, preventive and rehabilitative in the nature of eye care to all strata of Malaysian Society.
  • To develop Education and Research Programs in the context of our search for Excellence and Continuing Medical Education.
  • To establish Professional linkages with reputable centres Internationally for mutual exchange of evolving technologies.
  • To ensure the evolvement of the Hospital as a Regional Centre of Excellence. 

I Care Vision 20/20

The hospital continues to collaborate with Yayasan Pelajaran Islam to provide extra eye care to pre-school children. Eye problems detected at this early age respond better to treatment.

The I Care Vision 20/20¡a project commenced in November 1996,where a total of 771 pre-school teachers from all over the country have been trained, they in turn tested over 20,000 pre-school children-365 have been found to have eye defects.

The project also includes the provision of 2 mobile clinics for carrying out assessment and corrective procedures in the rural areas.
